Off Beat: Brown & Brown workers hit their stride with TreadDesks
Insurance broker Brown & Brown Inc. hopes to make great strides toward improving employee wellness via the introduction of TreadDesks in its Indianapolis office.
When members of Brown & Brown's wellness committee started talking about installing TreadDesk, which is essentially a workstation equipped with a treadmill rather than a chair, they thought that only a few employees would be interested in using it. Instead, Brown & Brown employees have been lining up to take their turn checking email and performing other tasks while walking, rather than sitting — their usual cubicle posture.
Because of the TreadDesk's popularity, the broker plans to add more, with the ultimate goal of lowering employee health care costs, employee Meredith Sharp said in a televised interview.
“We thought the more we could get people to move, the better they would feel,” she said. “With declining health rates in Indiana, we found that to increase the employees' activity, it would be a good idea to bring these machines into our office. We wanted to combat sedentary lifestyles here at work, and we'll see that bleed into our employees' lives.”
The treadmill/desk combination is made by Fishers, Ind.-based TreadDesk Inc.
"I love my TreadDesk!! One of the best purchases I have ever made. Thank You!!"
